TeachPublicArt transforms public artworks into meaningful learning experiences for K-12 students. The city itself is a classroom, filled with creativity, culture, and community stories waiting to be explored!

TeachPublicArt was created by Cat Chiu, a Visual Arts Teacher with over 20+ years of experience, a public artist, and is the Visual/Media Arts Resource Teacher for San Diego Unified. She is also a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at San Diego State University. Cat’s work centers on community-engaged artmaking, cultural visibility, and expanding creative learning opportunities for all K-12 students.

Vision

As TeachPublicArt grows, we aim to expand into new tools that make community arts learning even more engaging, including interactive maps, slide decks, and digital experiences that help students unlock the stories behind the artworks around them.

Community-Centered: Resources highlight artworks from the community, bringing local culture and identity into the classroom.

Inquiry-Based: Scaffolded questions support K-12 critical thinking, observation, and creative reflection.

Teacher-Ready: Designed especially for new teachers who need immediate, easy-to-use resources.

Place-Based: The city itself is part of the learning experience!
